Snow does not automatically mean skiing - in Slovakia, Andorra, Bulgaria or Finland you can try any number of winter activities such as snowshoeing, sledging, snowboarding, dog sledding, igloo building or even snowmobiling. An excellent location for all things winter is Swedish Lapland.

Try spending a night at -5oC in the famous Ice Hotel, which is more an on-going art project than straight accommodation, where every suit is carved out of ice and snow. The beauty of this winter wonderland makes it a popular destination with adventurous couples from all over the world who come to tie the knot in the ice chapel or honeymoon in the ice suites, where the beds are made of ice blocks and reindeer skin mattresses. Of course, the possibility of seeing the magical Northern Lights makes this one of the world`s most romantic destinations.

If stretching your legs through acres of unspoiled scenery appeals to you then take a trip to some amazing destinations in continental Europe or even a little further afield. Mallorca, Turkey, Greece and Sicily all offer tantalising walking and trekking experiences.

For something a little bit different, the island of Madeira is a spectacular place for a walking holiday. With its dramatic coastal views, beautiful flowers and striking landscapes it has often been called a `floating garden`.

Take a cheap cruise around the island and admire the panoramic vistas or just sit back and enjoy the typical Madeiran fare of amazing seafood and traditional Madeira wine.
